The EmStat can be combined with two types of multiplexers as one integrated instrument to perform measurements with multiple electrode systems. With the MUX8 connecting arrays or other setups made of up to eight working electrodes in two or three electrode cell types is possible. The reference and counter electrodes can be shared or separated. The MUX16 is suitable for sensor arrays or other setups with sixteen working electrodes but only in 2 electrode cell types. The combined counter and reference electrode can be shared by all working electrodes or each working electrode has a corresponding combined reference and working electrode.

The potentiostat is controlled as well as powered by USB and is used with PSTrace. The MUX can sample different cells at a rate of 25 ms/cell. Usually a method needs to be finished to switch the cell but the fast sampling per cell makes it possible to measure time depending techniques, e.g. chronoamperometry, practically simultaneous. Via the script window of PSTrace it is also possible to perform a different experiment with each of the channels.

EmStatMUX8

The EmStatMUX8, a combined EmStat3 potentiostat with an 8 channel multiplexer, can be connected to 8 electrochemical cells or sensors. This multiplexer can be used with different electrode or sensor configurations:

  • Eight separate cell or sensors each with a working, reference and counter electrode,

  • Eight separate cell or sensors each with a working and combined reference and counter electrode,

  • Cell or sensor array with eight working electrodes sharing a reference and a counter electrode,

  • Cell or sensor array with eight working electrodes sharing a combined reference/counter electrode.

In all configurations the sensors can be multiplexed, leaving the not-selected electrodes or sensors at open circuit. Configurations 2, 3 and 4 also have the possibility to apply the specified potential to all electrodes or sensors continuously.

The multiplexers is supported by the PSTrace software and provide the possibility to select a channel and to start a measurement using the selected channel or measuring all channels consecutively. In amperometric mode all 8 channels can be measured simultaneously, yielding up to 8 curves in a single measurement.

EmStatMUX16

The EmStatMUX16, a combined EmStat3 potentiostat with a 16 channel multiplexer, can be connected to 16 electrochemical cells or sensors.  This multiplexer can be used with different electrode or sensor configurations:

  • Sixteen separate cells or sensors each with a working and combined reference and counter electrode,

  • Cell or sensor array with sixteen working electrodes sharing one reference and one counter electrode,

  • Cell or sensor array with sixteen working electrodes all sharing one combined reference/counter electrode.

In all configurations the working electrodes can be multiplexed, leaving the not-selected electrodes at open circuit, or having the potential applied to all working electrodes continuously.

The multiplexer is supported by the PSTrace software and provide the possibility to select a channel and to start a measurement using the selected channel or measuring all channels consecutively. In amperometric mode all 16 channels can be measured simultaneously, yielding up to 16 curves in a single measurement.
